Call for Entries: 12th Annual Kerry Film Festival
•Application Deadline

Kerry Film Festival (KFF) will run from 29 October – 5 November 2011 and is offering cash prizes to up and coming film makers.

The main feature of Kerry Film Festival is a short film competition that focuses on young film makers and awards prizes in a number of different categories including Best Irish Film, Best International Film, Best Documentary Film and Best Animated Film. Winning films are selected by a world class panel of adjudicators, with KFF adjudicators including such leading lights as Jeremy Irons, Noel Pearson, Liam Neeson and Gabriel Byrne. KFF also presents the Maureen O’ Hara award to a lady that has excelled in film, with Oscar winning actress Juliette Binoche picking up the award in 2010, which was presented by Maureen O’ Hara herself.

The focus of Kerry Film Festival is, as always, on young, up-and-coming filmmakers, giving the KFF audience an opportunity to see and love the work of directors before they become widely known. While KFF is an intimate little festival, the quality of both the films and the panel of adjudicators consistently punch above the festival’s weight. Having such well respected adjudicators view and select the winning films is a huge advantage to winning filmmakers. “It’s one of the unique strengths of KFF,” said Director, Jason O’Mahony, “We offer young filmmakers a chance to have their work seen by respected pros and, if their film is selected, then the kudos which goes along with having their film selected will hopefully help them take the next step in their careers.”

The project is an interactive gathering to explore the relationship between audio stimulation and visual expression. The musicians will play their pieces at random and then the artists will begin to create spontaneously, using as much of the space and paper as possible, without restriction and with the aim of a stream of consciousness expression. They will just create! The length of the session will be restricted and when one group finishes, other viewers will be invited to join and new works will be created, back to back to back. At the end of the whole session, we will see all the works, the musicians as well as the participants, and we can observe the subconscious parallels, differences and the multiple translations from audio to visual. The activity is meant to be stimulating, expulsive and participatory. Furthermore it will be an act to get the visual artists, musicians and the inhabitants of the Istanbul in a room together.

Sideways festival: Call for Projects
•Application Deadline

Sideways is a translocal, experimental festival for contemporary art and cultural research, exploring different 'pathscapes' in the northern region of Belgium. This first-time event will unfold on the go across a four week period in the summer of 2012. It foresees a broad program of visual art, walks, live art and site-specific interventions. The project is a joint initiative of an environmental NGO (Trage Wegen), a visual arts' centre (Verbeke Foundation) and an artist collective (Glasbak).

The festival invites artists and audiences to explore the many non-motorized paths and trails folded into the spaces of our everyday life. The event itself moves beyond the conventional spaces of art display and reception. The Sideways programme stages diverse actions and situations on the open-air sites of paths and trails, both rural and urban. The programming blends arts-based and artistic practices with more vernacular forms of creativity and poetic practice that emerge along pathways.

General considerations and requirements (extract)

- All projects must engage with the main thematic thread of Sideways (pathscapes) or address related questions (see also project background following the link).
- Proposals may concern the journey component of the festival (or a phase thereof), as well as an intervention at one of the festival nodes (or a combination of both).
- Applications must be written in English, French or Dutch. The complete application (paper or digital form) should be sent to the following address before August 15th 2011:

2011 William H. Johnson Prize
•Application Deadline

Applications for the 2011 William H. Johnson Prize are now available online at with an August 15, 2011 due date for all applications. The 2011 William H. Johnson Prize is 25,000 USD and the winner will be announced later in the year.

The William H. Johnson Prize is awarded annually to an early career African American artist. For our purposes, "early career" is a flexible term that should be interpreted liberally to include artists who have finished their academic work within twelve years from the year that the prize is awarded. For example, a person who finished their studies in 1999 is eligible to apply in 2011, but not in 2012. Age is not determinative, and artists who have not earned BFAs or MFAs are still eligible so long as they have not been working as an artist for more than twelve years.

The William H. Johnson Foundation for the Arts is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization that seeks to encourage African American artists early in their careers by offering financial grants. The William H. Johnson Foundation awards grants to individuals who work in the following media: painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking, installation and/or new genre.

The "Host City": Media Festivals and Urban Spaces
•Application Deadline

As film and media festivals of all stripe proliferate around
the world, a variety of stakeholders jockey for position and advantage
in the geographical and cultural contexts chosen to host them. Many of
these events are well-established and have assumed a defensive position
aimed at maintaining brand identity and prestige. Others are ascendant,
still others nascent at best. Each of these communities, however, have a
unique relationship to their event(s), and each of these relationships
provides fertile ground for investigating the role of media festivals in
promoting discourses of community identity, establishing infrastructural
networks, reifying the importance of being mediated, utilizing the
"local" to speak "globally", and a variety of other processes. Case
studies on particular events/locations, comparative analyses, and
attempts to theorize the event-location relationship are welcome, among
other approaches.

Panel proposal: The "Host City": Media Festivals and Urban Spaces

industry festivals and the urban, sub-urban or rural communities that
claim them.

A B S T R K T / An International Exhibit Exploring Works of Abstraction
•Application Deadline

Eligibility: ABSTRKT is open to everyone. Professionals as well as students are encouraged to enter. The only limitation is that entries must represent original works of art that are a sincere representation of abstraction.

Media: Open to any and all traditional and non-traditional visual arts genre and media, (including video, photography, etc.)

A full-color catalog will be produced. Each exhibitor will receive one free copy.
There are at least three components to a work of art. Often one of them, Subject, supersedes the others, bordering on distraction and flirtation with nostalgia. Abstraction diminishes or sublimates the role of Subject in such a way as to allow Form a chance to take center stage. In essence, Form becomes the Subject. Ironically, this rebalancing gives way to a clearer, and perhaps more truthful, experience of a work of art as a real thing - something that is itself rather than a reference to some external 'other.'

Manifest launches its exciting eighth season with a project intended to feature and explore contemporary abstraction. From non-objective, geometric, expressive... to figurative abstraction (works in which there is a recognizable subject that is distorted, is in some way not 'realistic', or is clearly secondary to the overall formal nature of the work).

'Our era prefers the image to the thing, the copy to the original, the representation to the reality, appearance to being.’ Ludwig Feuerbach

Over the past hundred years our internal memories have been replaced with external aids such as the photograph. These technological crutches are there so we no longer need to store information in our brains.

The implications of replacing our interior memory with an external source means that something will be lost in this process. What is at stake here is every part of our relationship with the world and the people in it. Photography’s sheer ability to be everywhere has affected the collective memory of social and cultural experiences to the extent that photographs can often appear to function as a substitute for the experience themselves.

elysium gallery is looking for work that addresses the notion of photographic representation and the impact this has on the way we see and interact with the world.

A selection of up to 8 images can be submitted. Work must be wall mountable with each image no larger than 20x24 inches.

Entry fee is £10 or £8 for students.

The show will be a selection of the best pieces of work with one overall winner claiming the prize of £200. All successful entrants will also receive a profile page on the elysium gallery web site and an annual subscription to our membership programme free of charge.

The competition is open to both Italian and foreign artists.

The Share Prize this year will focus on the theme for the 7th Share Festival, entitled Cops & Robbers. The theme takes its inspiration from the use of appropriationism, activism and plagiarism in art, which today has turned fakes, mash ups and remixes into an avant-garde artistic stance that flirts with what customarily is the wrong side of the law.

An international jury will short-list six finalists for the prize, who will be invited to take part in the 7th Share Festival, to be held in Torino from 2nd to 6th November 2011, at the Regional Museum of Natural Science. The winner will receive a cash prize of EUR 2,500.00.

A symposium on EEG (and biofeedback) for the Arts
16 - 18 September 2011, Brussels

With the emergence of affordable EEG devices and other biofeedback sensors for the health and game industry, we see more and more artists inspired by these promising technologies in which they imagine the possibility of measuring one's emotions.

From the very early experiment of Alvin Lucier and David Rosenboom to the latest art projects using fashionable EEG headsets, the question remains open: what do our brainwaves tell us? And furthermore, how can they be used by artists, at present and in the future?

During this 3 days symposium+showcase, we will attempt to explore the potential of EEG and biofeedback for artistic purpose by comparing and discussing various technologies and projects at the cross-road of Art and Science.

With: Peter Beyls, Christophe De Boeck (Staalhemel), Thierry Castermans (Numediart), Mattia Casalegno & Enzo Varriale (Unstable Empathy), Alexis Chazard (Post traumatic voyager), Kiel Long (The static organ), Luciana Haill (IBVA), Valery Vermeulen (EMO-Synth),...

Vitrine Project 4th season: Video Art in Public Space
•Application Deadline

Vitrine is a platform for experimenting with video art in public space. It offers the artists and the public a unique opportunity to engage with multi-screen video works right on the side of the street. Vitrine is aimed at exploring the potentials of multi-screen video works in public space and the notions of transience – moving images and moving public.

We seek proposals in the form of video works that are innovative in their approach and daring in their exploration.
Sound is not an option for Vitrine and we prioritize non-violent imagery.

The fourth season of Atopia’s Vitrine will run from Nov. 2011 to Feb. 2012.

Aufruf 'Wahl haben' (Haben und Brauchen)
•Application Deadline

Vorschlag/ Idee:

Freiräume, in denen affektive Arbeit stattfindet, in denen

18. September 2011 in Berlin!

•Application Deadline

The 13th edition of CTM will take place from 30th January to 5th February
2012, at various venues in Berlin - as ususal parallel to and in cooperation
with transmediale.

With the 2012 theme Spectral, CTM.12 dedicates itself to the musical and
medial visitations of rejected past aesthetics and their unredeemed utopias
or dystopias, the uncanniness of media’s hallucinatory effects as well as
the quest for experiences of transcendence. DIY-media-archaeology, the
exploration of the deep material structures of sounds, media and archives,
the offensive recourse on past aesthetics to the point of the archaic, a
visible superimposition of different temporalities, psychotropy, occult
media, private mysticism, deception, mundane alchemy or specific forms of
negativity as an at times bitter, at times euphoric rejection of the
presence – these all provide points of entry into current constructions of
reality, to respectively adjure or exorcise the inherent ghosts.

For CTM.12 we invite artists, musicians, researchers and activists to submit
projects and works that explore aspects of the festival theme as proposals
for CTM.12’s music, performance, discourse, workshop or exhibition program.

The deadline is 31st August 2011.

OK. Video Festival 2011 conceives flesh as a metaphor of biological entity of the human body that transforms into digital entity (images, sounds, texts) through the advancement of audiovisual technology. It also represents video that progressively shows its organic characters: grow in virtual sphere across the dimensional and temporal boundaries, metamorphoses into various medium and consistently reproduces itself by the reason of virality. This phenomena is continuously celebrated by our contemporary society within the progression of information and communication technology.

The festival invites public to discuss various questions:

how far this kind of new flesh interacts with social, political and cultural aspects? Are we really celebrating democracy or is it just another virtual euphoria? How does the intersection between private and public domain continuously expand and shift? How do social and power structure cope with these changes? Thus, what are the consequences in relation with the discourses of history, tradition, religion, urban and rural culture, popular culture, mass media, sexuality, identity and violence?

A chapter in the “New History of Photography’ by Michel Frizot is titled; ‘Around the World – Explorers, travelers + tourists.’ It is from this heading that the inspiration grew to take a journey around the globe and showcase artist’s work from different countries. This will be a journey of discoveries to open our horizons to photographers working in different parts of the world.

Every month or so, we will travel virtually to a new country, and showcase work from four artists from that region. We will invite artists from each ‘stop’ on our journey to submit one portfolio, and to share a bit about themselves and what it is like to work in their country.

The total collection will not exceed 80 prints, so the first ‘tour’ will be to approximately twenty countries. We hope to create a limited edition print with each artist that will be available to purchase through Lúz Gallery, in Victoria B.C. and online at

It is our hope that by taking this journey around the world that we can expand our knowledge of photographers working across the globe, and introduce their work to a wider audience of buyers, collectors and admirers.

We have twenty countries that we have selected for our journey around the world. Our first stop, will be in the tradition of the book, the United Kingdom!
