Curatorial Open Call: apexart Franchise Program

From April 4 - May 2, 2012, apexart will accept 500-word creatively written proposals describing your idea for an exhibition. The proposal should be clearly written, with the major emphasis on explaining the concept, as the only instructions given to the more than 100 jurors from around the world is to, 'identify the best exhibitions.' The city for the exhibition must be listed as well as the curator/organizer's location of residence. Often there is a greater effect when exhibitions take place outside of a city center, where fewer people are involved in the commercial art world.
Two winners selected by a 'crowd sourcing' method will be in charge of a one-month apexart franchise with an up to $8,000 exhibition budget, an honorarium for the essay and organization of the show, and complete creative control with a few apexart guidelines. We will also provide the necessary guidance and administrative support to make the exhibition happen as successfully as past exhibitions in Jordan, Johann

We will also provide the necessary guidance and administrative support to make the exhibition happen as successfully as past exhibitions in Jordan, Johannesburg, Stockholm, Los Angeles, Bangkok, and Mexico City. apexart will also print a mini-catalog in an edition of 9,000 with an essay from the curator that is distributed around the world to more than 100 countries and available online with all contacts, reviews, and press images.

The Franchise is an opportunity to bring an idea to fruition in a new place and to confirm that the center of the world is wherever you are.

Residence this summer in Kassel: "temporary home 2012 - home in crisis"
•Application Deadline

´temporary home´ is a interdisciplinary arts and culture initiative which actively explores concepts of 'home' in its broader sense. The 2012 edition home in crisis asks how situations of crisis affect the notions, needs and desires of home. The project runs for six weeks from July 1st – August 24th, 2012, parallel to the upcoming documenta13 in Kassel, Germany. During this time, ´temporary home´ literally manifests as a real home for a group of international creatives who will live and work together in a joint investigation, the lived-in installation. The project starts July 1st with a two-week 'construction of home' phase, followed by one month of occupancy (starting July 13th) featuring an ongoing cultural program with art exhibition, performances, music, theatre display, movie nights, discussions, and the creation of space for social interaction and experimentation. All events will be non-for-proft and open to the public.

We invite creative individuals or groups to become part of the lived-in installation temporary home and to develop and present their own concepts about ´home in crisis´ in Kassel, 2012. Applicants for a residency in the context of temporary home should be prepared to join a creative social setting rather then present in a conventional art show. Candidates should be willing to physically reside within the project for a period of one or two weeks and to actively share a social home with other residents, attendees, and visitors.

Our perception is transmitting a steady and continuously updated flow of information as a basis for creating our consciousness and orientation. Trained constants of orientation within space are saved in our memory, as part of a common world knowledge. We relate to this knowledge during processes of imagination, planning and space-time reasoning. Hence orientation is generated as an individual achievement and a cognition gained by a subject actively engaged with its environment. The function of orientation is generated only through this interrelation.

Mental space is an ability which refers to cognition and contains subjective consciousness in the following dimensions:
1. Orientation referring to space
( look at the location of space, we will research this at our work location/work space in
Stattbad Wedding)
2. Orientation referring to identity
How does space affect us and how far does our mental space reach out?

Interactivos?'12 Dublin: Hack the City. Current and Future Needs
•Application Deadline

Hacking has always been associated with innovative appropriations of existing resources, re-engineering, working below the radar, and modifying structures to reap new benefits. What happens if you take the philosophy of hacking and apply it to the urban environment? When you consider innovative ways to harness the flows of energy, data and people that pass through the city every day?

Interactivos?'12 Dublin will see Medialab Prado and Science Gallery work together to set up an experimental laboratory to channel hacker culture, and allow artists, designers, makers, doers, data nerds, hobbyists, citizen scientists, tech geeks, activists, edgy engineers and DIY urban planners to take control over the resolution of problems that affect and link together worldwide 'communities of concern'. Interactivos?'12 Dublin will move citizen science out of the garage/prototype stage and onto the street.

Interactivos?'12 Dublin is part of HACK THE CITY, Dublin's 2012 flagship exhibition organized by Science Gallery that will engage and inspire participants to transform the city from the ground up, to rethink cities through the spirit and philosophy of the hacker ethos - to bend, mash-up, tweak and cannibalise city systems, to create possibilities, empower the citizen, illustrate visionary thinking and demonstrate real-world examples for sustainable urban futures. HACK THE CITY will capitalize on Dublin's resources as a nimble multi-national, multi-lingual, rapidly growing European city, ideally placed to act as 'laboratory' for testing ideas and technologies that have a direct impact on citizens' lives.

In 2011 AND worked in partnership with the British Waterways and The Waterways Trust to pilot an artists residency programme. In Summer 2012 we are offering another unique opportunity for an artist to be in residence on a canal boat on and around the Manchester and Pennine waterways.

The aim of the programme is to offer artists (minimum of two participants) a dedicated period of time to develop research or a project in this unique habitat. AND are seeking applications from individuals / groups working in emerging artistic practice that questions normality. Applicants should have an established background in their respective fields and should be able to demonstrate how a residency period at AND will assist the development of their research and practice.

This residency will be based on a Canal Boat on the Manchester and Pennine Waterways, Northwest England for approximately four weeks in August and September 2012. Accommodation will be provided on a canal boat for four weeks, full training on boat handling and maintenance will be provided at the beginning of the residency. A route will be mapped out in collaboration with the resident artists and partner organisations.

The handling of a canal boat requires two people, therefore the residency is open to a minimum of two people. There may be a possibility to provide accommodation for more participants, so the residency encourages applications from collaborating artists, collectives and families (fees and stipend remain the same).

The performance will take place on the outdoor grounds of exRotaprint in Wedding, on May 27th 2012 at 3pm and will finish at approximately 330pm. Baruch Gottlieb and Francesca Romana Ciardi are looking for 100 people interested in becoming a part of a unique site-specific and monumental performance, manifesting the living history of industrial architecture. Set in the unusual and suggestive setting of exRotaprint, a former printer factory in Wedding, the Biographical Chronicle of Industrial Production retraces the stories of the people who produced the world we live in today.

Using a model of the construction of the Ex-Rotaprint factory, participants will re-present the workers originally involved in the construction of the building over 60 years ago by appearing ‘on stage’ for a time proportional to the the historical person they are representing. This time ‘on stage’ will generally be quite short, on the average 5 seconds at a time...The rest of the participants, when not on stage or getting ready to go on stage, will produce background sounds ‘back stage’ for the performance.

Trieste Contemporanea International Design Competition
•Application Deadline

The Trieste Contemporanea Committee publishes the tenth edition of the International Design Competition with the aim of showcasing the most original design offerings from the countries of Central Eastern Europe.

Theme of the 2012 competition: In a saturated consumer market where design is everywhere (and nowhere) there are objects from the recent past whose traces are being lost. They are anonymous or everyday objects, on a small scale or mass production. The aim is to build a large memory atlas dedicated to the anonymous design of the countries of Central Eastern Europe, therefore in this year’s competition, participants are asked to identify an object from the collective memory, which demonstrates design skill, it can be simple or complex as long as it is meaningful.

More information:

Trieste Contemporanea. Dialogues with the Art of Central Eastern Europe' is a committee of cultural institutions and associations created in June 1995 with the objective of bringing out the role of Trieste as a hinge between Western Europe, the countries of Eastern Europe and the countries of the Mediterranean area for the creation in Trieste of an observatory on the contemporary situation of art and culture in Central-Eastern Europe. The Trieste Contemporanea Committee runs its activity through collaborations, co-productions and exchanges on an international level. Initiatives dedicated to visual art, music, cinema, literature, multimediality, theatre, architecture and design have been held in Trieste and abroad.
