“A BURNT-OUT CASE?”
•Application Deadline

15.01.2012

For the show “A Burnt-Out Case?” at the NGBK from 09/01 to 10/14/2012, we therefore invite artists, artists’ groups, activists and interdisciplinary pro-
jects to cast a view from the future back to the present and create complex perspectives on burnout – not only as an individual but above all as a social
symptom. We are looking for disturbing, contrary, illogical, associative positions and strategies that evade appropriation and victim discourses and instead describe a utopian and fictitious future. Will we still be familiar with burnout in the year 2062, and how will the exhausted society of 2012 be remembered? Are there signs of learning from the effects of neoliberal work models? What kind of alternative concepts exist?

We are interested in positions that approach the theme of burnout in an
associative manner or reflect on own subjective viewpoints.

What we find exciting in this context are politically motivated statements, poetic views, and process-related forms of work that are further developed during the course of the exhibition or that directly deal with artistic production. Participatory strategies, performative approaches, and works intervening in public space are just as welcome as classical forms of expression. One focus of the show is on the perspective of artists and creatives in their precarised surroundings: Particularly in the arts business we discern the willingness to at all times do the utmost and enable what appears unworkable.

The jury’s decision will be presented by 31 March, 2012. The selected artists will receive up to 1,400 euros incl. VAT (fee and material) to realise their work, which they will present at the NGBK Berlin from 09/01 to 10/14/2012.

Utopia? - Call for work
•Application Deadline

16.01.2012

"Studio 27 is looking for short videos and films for our next program at the Big Muddy Film Festival 34 at Southern Illinois University. We are curating a special out-of-competition screening titled "Utopia?" For this program, we are seeking experimental films and videos (under 30 minutes) that critique or express a fundamental shift in the trajectory of contemporary utopian thought and practice. We are interested in work that explores how utopia, as a projection of what is possible in the future, can be an implicit critique of what is lacking in the present, an indication of how far we have to go to achieve an ideal society. As the notion of dystopia is integrally connected to utopia, we also welcome work that is dystopic in nature. Studio 27 at Big Muddy Film Festival
•Application Deadline

16.01.2012

Studio 27 is looking for short videos and films for our next program at the Big Muddy Film Festival 34 at Southern Illinois University. How do the limitations and contradictions of the present drive us toward escape or change?

Another timely concern is how utopia is not necessarily a physical or geographic space. Rather, it can be an internal space, a transformation of individual or social consciousness. How does the hope for radical social transformation haunt contemporary media art, and how does the utopian work of the historical avant-garde speak to present day aspirations?

For the purpose of this program, we will only consider work that is experimental in nature, or radically pushes the formal or conceptual boundaries of its genre. Please send us a prescreening copy of your work on playable DVD (or provide us a URL where we can stream or download a high quality preview). All submissions must include a brief project synopsis, artist statement, and contact information (email address, phone number).

T E X T U A L I T Y - MANIFEST
•Application Deadline

25.01.2012

Not long after humanity began drawing, drawings evolved into writing. Pictures became symbols, abstraction blossomed, and language became visual. Two branches, sharing one root, carried forward people's ideas, feelings, and plans. The visual and the verbal arts shared the role of encapsulating civilization's data. And they continue to do so today, in so many wondrous and varied ways. TEXTUALITY is an exhibit that inquires into the overlap of these two branches, seeking examples of where the verbal is made visual, where language returns into image.

Eligibility: TEXTUALITY is open to everyone. Professionals as well as students are encouraged to enter

Sociology of the Arts – Artistic Practices
•Application Deadline

31.01.2012

The Research Network Sociology of the Arts hereby announces its 7th conference which will take place in Vienna from September 5th to the 8th, 2012. The organisation of the conference will be undertaken by the Institute for Music Sociology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

The focus of the key conference lectures will be on artistic practices. The concept of practice differs from the classical concept of action. Concrete practices are located in communities of practice and therefore should be analysed on the basis of their embedding in social structures and cultural dynamics. This theoretical conception also transforms our understanding of other concepts such as knowledge, intention, meaning, institution, rule, structure, and power.

The Call for Papers of this conference is also open for presentations to all core areas of arts sociology. We invite experienced and young scholars from various disciplines sensitive to social inquiries into the arts to participate in the conference.

MANIFEST - TAPPED 3 - Third Annual Exhibit of Works by Professors and their Students
•Application Deadline

05.11.2012

Third Annual Exhibit of Works by Professors and their Students (past or present)
The relationship between art students and their professors can be a powerful one. Even when this bond is left unstated, we carry our professors' voices forward in time as we mature as artists and people. We eventually realize that the instruction given by our teachers during our relatively brief careers as students continues to expand within us. We realize that the learning they inspired (or insisted upon) is a chain-reaction process that develops across our lifetime. All of us who have been students carry forward our professors' legacy in one form or another. And those who are, or have been professors, bear witness to the potency of studenthood.

Call for Papers: 39th Annual AAH Conference & Bookfair University of Reading - From Utopian Teleologies to Sporadic Historiographies: ‘Interfaces’ of art and cybernetics
•Application Deadline

12.11.2012

The AAH (Association of art historians) annual conference is an established, international event that provides a valuable platform for current, interdisciplinary, research and critical debate for delegates with a broad range of research and ideas. The session redresses a lack of attention to cybernetics globally. It invites presenters in the visual arts and from non-art disciplines to reconsider or generate new knowledge about generations and geographies of art and cybernetics, including practices that create, distribute, and theorise art forms, concepts, and histories. Papers may explore cybernetic phenomena in artistic environments; examine artistic play on logic and reason; consider how art or non-art agents treat cybernetics as a social and cultural paradigm, or question how cybernetics is presented in historiographies of recent art, and what interfaces of cybernetics and art bode for intra- and inter-disciplinary research and practice.
Paper proposal form: http://ow.ly/bJn87.

The AAH promotes the professional practice and public understanding of art history. We are the national organisation for the discipline and serve a key role in shaping and securing the future study of art history and visual culture.
AAH conferences are established, international events that provide a valuable platform for current, interdisciplinary, research and critical debate. The three-day programme includes more than two-hundred academic papers, as well as keynote lectures from leading figures within art history and visual culture.

MMX was 2010 and re:MMX is 2012, a remix of the old project but with an emphasis on public art. We left our location 2 years ago but have now been invited back to react to the development and construction site that was our former art space. Seeking provocative video work that even address gentrification and/or the negativity of global expansion.

Haus der Kunst is a non-collecting public museum and a key global center for contemporary art located in Munich, Germany. It is dedicated to the exploration of the diverse histories of contemporary art based on a foundation of focused exhibitions, research, and education. The museum’s aim is to establish research as an integral cornerstone of its vision, and to develop a context for scholarship that allows for the interplay of art, culture, politics, and society in the way modern and contemporary art are understood on a global level. The Goethe-Institut Fellowship is an important building block towards this aim. Supported by the Goethe-Institut, the Goethe-Institut Fellowship at Haus der Kunst is designed for international emerging scholars whose research focuses on global perspectives on modern and contemporary art in the second half of the 20th century and 21st century.
