Call for entries: artists' long format film
•Application Deadline

01.02.2012

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for a quality, original idea that will appeal to a large audience and be delivered as a long format film by the full range of creative talent in both film and dance/performance that is available in the UK and beyond. We envisage the commissioned film-maker/s as being willing to explore the boundaries within the chosen film genre and its relationship to the intrinsic qualities of dance and/or performance within film.

We are looking for exciting, feasible proposals that can be made with a development and production budget of between approximately £120K and £400K.

We are looking for projects from artists and film makers who demonstrate the ability to conceive and deliver an extremely strong film, for a highly competitive marketplace.

Presented by Portland Green Cultural Projects, FLAMIN and the Hayward Gallery, ALFF (artists' long format film) is the working abbreviation for a commission for a film in any genre; creative documentary, drama, artists' film, cinematic essay or animation, which uses dance/performance as a driver.

The commission is inspired by the recent critical successes of artists' long format films which have clearly demonstrated the range of contemporary performance styles that can be used effectively in long format films and still attract a mainstream audience.

Hegel and Spinoza, negativity in contemporary theory
•Application Deadline

03.02.2012

Whether under the name of lack, nothingness, non-being, void, splitting,
torsion, or clinamen, the problem of negativity is central to contemporary
philosophy. The hypothesis of this workshop is that many of the current
debates revolving around this key issue—from Lacanians and Deleuzians,
Althusserians and Heideggerians, philosophers of contradiction and
antagonism and thinkers of affirmation and multiplicity—consist in a
productive repetition of one of the crucial controversies of 19th century
thought, summed up by the names ‘Hegel and Spinoza’.

Gregor Moder will present his paper “Hegel and Spinoza. Negativity in
Contemporary Theory,” followed by a response by Pascale Gillot, and
plenty of time for discussion.

The Berlin Institute for Cultural Inquiry is an independent centre for research and culture dedicated to exploring how diverse cultures can be brought into productive rather than pernicious confrontation. It takes 'culture' in a broad sense to include cultures associated with different identities (such as age, class, ethnicity, gender, nationality, race, religion, sexuality), spaces (such as city, internet, work) or discourses (such as art, economics, law, media, politics, science). It understands 'culture' as a contested and problematic notion and remains open to its various meanings in relation to other terms (such as implicit knowledge, nature, signifying practice, structure of feeling, ways of life).

221A Artist Run Centre is a non-profit organization that supports and facilitates dialogue between contemporary art and design. 2012 will mark the organizations fourth year of programming artistic and curatorial practices in Canada. Since its inception in 2005, the organization has quickly become a foothold for ‘Critical Design’ – an emerging field of contemporary art that seeks out a wider space for work that examines and challenges the application and implementation of design. The activity of design has been increasingly limited to market-oriented practices, where designers are left without a critical space for investigation around the lived effect of designed graphics, products and architecture – the use and development of social codes and conventions. 221A maintains assertive efforts to pay above CARFAC rates to curators and contemporary artists who work with or around these capacities.

Triple Canopy - Call for proposals 2012
•Application Deadline

13.02.2012

Artists
Triple Canopy welcomes artist projects that treat the Internet as a medium and seek to develop ideas that engage with—but reach beyond—its specific qualities and attendant modes of readership and viewership. Which is to say we’re most excited by projects that present original artwork made for the Web, but are not necessarily Net art...

Writers
In part because Triple Canopy is an online journal, we’re most interested in writing that, in its form, considers and utilizes the Internet as a medium with its own specific qualities and attendant modes of readership. This may mean thinking beyond the strictures of linear narrative or deliberately incorporating visual and audio media. That said, quality prose, an original (or patently unoriginal) approach to poetry and cross-genre writing, and compelling subject matter are of utmost interest to us, and there’s no need to embellish a great piece of writing with hyperlinks and YouTube clips...

Triple Canopy is an online magazine, workspace, and platform for editorial and curatorial activities. Working collaboratively with writers, artists, and researchers, Triple Canopy facilitates projects that engage the Internet’s specific characteristics as a public forum and as a medium, one with its own evolving practices of reading and viewing, economies of attention, and modes of interaction. In doing so, Triple Canopy is charting an expanded field of publication, drawing on the history of print culture while acting as a hub for the exploration of emerging forms and the public spaces constituted around them. Triple Canopy is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization.

the intensity of urban life--curators, openings, presentations--consumes
all of your time and leaves you without energy to concentrate on artistic

you are working with site-specific projects involving local communities,
reflecting on the natural and/or cultural environment;
you love coincidences and want to meet artists from all over the world in
order to collaborate with them now or in the future;

Art Vs Law: An inherent Conflict?
•Application Deadline

17.02.2012

Lecturer: Alan Cunnigham, Ph.D. in Intellectual Property Law and Theory

This course will provide a better understanding of issues concerning certain forms of contemporary art and copyright law, specifically topics related to appropriation, contractual issues and moral rights.

Beginning with a historical and philosophical exploration of the emergence of the political act of appropriation in art, it moves to then examining how the law has intervened when it has been felt - by artists or others - that certain appropriations are 'too much' and concludes with practical lessons for the artist about utilizing copyright and contract law to facilitate their practice instead of letting such laws restrict or prevent it.

Cooperative Art Strategies and Participatory Potential in the Public Space

Venue:
Potsdamer Str. 91
10785 Berlin

From February 19 to 26, 2012, the Citizen Art Days pilot project will take place in Berlin’s public space and the Freies Museum Berlin. The project has been initiated by the “Parallel Worlds” artist group (Stefan Krüskemper, María Linares and Kerstin Polzin) with support from the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (“German Federal Agency for Civic Education”).

At Citizen Art Days renowned artists and urban actors examine Berlin's public space together with interested citizens using artistic strategies. Growing segregation within the social space leads to the erosion of the "public space" as a location for social communication and democratic processes.

The Citizen Art Days will be officially launched on Sunday February 19, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. in the Freies Museum Berlin and will include a Bastelperformance (“Handicraft Performance”) by the philosopher Hanno Depner.

We invite product, furniture, graphic, spatial or interaction designers to explore the idea of economy and resourcefulness in an object, an environment or an experience for their Designers in Residence 2012 proposal.'

48 Stunden Neukölln - registration deadline
•Application Deadline

29.02.2012

Under the device of Terminus:Neukölln, we invite artists to reflect the interesting but yet con-troversial discussed metamorphose of Neukölln. The subject matter is motivated by the 275th anniversary of the Bohemian migration to Rixdorf (Neukölln) on June 15th 1737 and the question what effect immigration has had on Neukölln since 1737.

Various generations of immigrants have settled in Neukölln in search of their own private happi-ness. The question whether they have found their own personal paradise here remains. Also, why have so many artists moved to Neukölln recently – and what impact has this had on life in the district? The public perception of Neukölln varies between hell fire and paradise.

radi0.tv Residency - Broadcasting offline
•Application Deadline

29.02.2012

We are looking for Cultural Producers with an interdisciplinary
approach and affinity to Sound and Radio from different countries
who want to realise artistically and / or theoretically a thematic or
media work in Berlin in April or May 2012. Between 01/04 - 30/04 or
01/05 - 31/05/2012 (in agreement) Our proposal for a Topic is:
"Broadcasting offline". The imperative of radio seems to be the
permanent airing and working with a sender. This is worded
consciously in a naive way since the matter is to put into question
exactly this media topos of the radio, the broadcasting with a
broadcaster. William S. Burroughs was testing broadcasting without
a broadcaster like revolution, wasn't he? Our interest focuses
especially on processual dispositions which not necessarily end up
in a track, a recording or a radio program but which could be
transmitted.

EDGE FUND, Radical funding for radical change
•Application Deadline

01.12.2012

We are committed to equality, and recognise the inherent inequalities involved in philanthropy. When society’s inequalities have been dissolved, the philanthropy of the wealthy will no longer exist. We are committed to creating new and more sustainable sources of funding based on the solidarity of the many, rather than the generosity of the few. We also aim to challenge traditional grant-making values and practices by being pioneering and providing a model that can be followed by others.

In the first round, grants are not likely to be more than £5,000 and for UK-based groups only.

How to apply:

http://edgefund.org.uk/how-to-apply/

The Edge Fund is a grant-making body with a difference. We support efforts to achieve social, economic and environmental justice and to end imbalances in wealth and power – and give those we aim to help a say in where the money goes.

Existing financial and political systems benefit the privileged few and put profit and economic growth before people and the environment. To challenge these inequalities effectively, we believe it is critical that decisions are made collectively, by those who donate money and those who receive it. To this end the Edge Fund consists of donors, activists and members of communities facing oppression and injustice. The Edge Fund also creates opportunities for people to build alliances with each other and share their learning and experiences.

03.12.2012

We’re looking for artists who want to investigate, who are curious to invent, discover, or refine a particular way of working. Deadline : 3rd December 2012

http://www.thetrianglelab.org/artist-investigator-project-call-for-proposals/

Triangle Lab experiments seek to expand who participates in theater-making and how they participate, seeking to discover new models for a theater that is relevant, inclusive, and responsive to our communities. We’re interested in exploring new forms, imagining different performance spaces, and rewriting the rules for how audiences and performers interact, We aim for theaters, artists and communities to become equal partners in discovering and sharing the profound stories of our times, challenging notions about the performer/spectator divide. We expect our experiments to yield new stories and new ways of telling them, new methods for applying theatrical tools to community challenges, and a broad range of participants engaged together in understanding our communities.

SoftControl Competition
•Application Deadline

09.12.2012

This call for entries is open for proposals which will mark the Museum’s presence in its neighbourhood, abandoning traditional commemorative approaches and permanent sculptural solutions, transforming ‘passive’ narratives into physical and symbolic presence, by concentrating on current social issues and relations or connecting with everyday life practice on the borderline between public and private, facts and fiction.
In the sense of media, the project supports performative and participatory works, urban interventions and outdoor installations whose audience – users or participants – cannot be predetermined. What is required: to explore approaches which use the public space to open and address the public which does not belong to the standard circuit of art events, but includes passers-by, neighbours, current visitors of streets and squares. By treating physical and symbolic distances between the artist / artwork and different ‘publics’.

Project description: Spajalica/Copula

CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR THE PROJECT Spajalica>Copula
SOFTCONTROL 2012-2015

http://www.softcontrol.info/

Starting from the often mentioned detachment of the museum zone, displacement from the public space as a consequence of involvement in programmatic tasks of collecting and safekeeping, this project raises the question of the manner of reactivating the public space and the artist’s presence in it.
In the wake of the initiative for different regulation of social space and leisure time, this project is interested in contemporary art practices which disturb the status quo and underline concealed, transposed or neglected contents in urban environment, regardless of the approach or medium the artists use.

Between|Worlds. Atmospheres of video games
•Application Deadline

15.12.2012

The publication project is underlain by the simple observation that the video game industry went through profound changes in the last five to ten years. At the latest since the early 2000’s, game developers began anew to discover and exhaust the potentials of the medium of the video game. More and more games – often designed in the independent gaming scene – move traditional game mechanisms – time-, decision- and configuration-critical queries to the players – into the background in favor of an emphasized ‚Erlebnishaftigkeit‘ – the presence of a (gaming) experience, so to speak. Thus, video games like Shadow of the Colossus (2006), Braid, The Void (both in 2009), Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010), Bastion, Limbo, Trauma (all in 2011), Anna, Botanicula, Home and Lone Survivor (all in 2012) – as well as many others – offer a gaming experience that is clearly targeting on an atmospheric effect...

Up till now, hermeneutic examinations, that make use of the interpretative methods of literary studies and ludological structure analysis, couldn't do justice to the meaning and variety of this trend and its subjects.

The proposal submissions (max. 5,000 characters) will be checked by the editors. The abstracts should contain a title, the author’s name, institution and address.

Submission of abstracts: 15 December 2012
Confirmation till: 15 January 2013
Submission of full text: 31 May 2013
Planned publication: Summer 2013

Manifest's First Ever Call for REALISM
•Application Deadline

17.12.2012

What is realism? In the context of this call it is work which provides an illusionistic or highly descriptive representation of some visible subject. Whether that be by painting, drawing, sculpture, or other media, it is nevertheless closely aligned to what the eye sees - tangible subject matter, with little distortion, subjective interpretation, or other manipulation of visible 'facts.' This is not to say works cannot nor should not have content, meaning, and drama, nor that they cannot include other non-realistic components. In fact, the 'real' that is depicted could be invented. The goal however is to convince the viewer by way of the art that the work represents something that exists outside the art itself.

Manifest stands for the quality presentation, experience, and documentation of the visual arts, engaging students, professionals, and the public from around the world through accessible world-class exhibits, studio programs, and publications.

Video Project: Le TGV en 50 secondes
•Application Deadline

31.12.2012

The project of this video demonstration is a homage to the Lumière brothers and the recognition of the fundamental role which the train had and has in the development of the voyage.
We are sure that “L'arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat”, a short of 50 seconds, was the first art film in the history. In its brevity, it takes on the cinematographic language and attests the social development in the sense of modernity, interpreted as freedom of collective and fast voyage.
CO.AR.CO. will dedicate its activity of the cultural season 2012 at the realization of an artists’ video collection on the topic of the TGV. The videos, just like the original film of the Lumière brothers “L'Arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat”, have a length of 50 seconds (+ generic titles) developing the subject of a travel by train.

Non-Participation: Call for Submissions
•Application Deadline

31.12.2012

Historic instances and examples include: Adrian Piper’s letter announcing her withdrawal from the show Reconsidering the Object of Art: 1965-1975 at LA MoCA, stating her opposition to Phillip Morris’ funding of the museum and requesting that her criticizing statement be publicly shown; A letter from Jo Baer to a Whitney Museum curator canceling an upcoming exhibition on the grounds that her work was not being taken seriously because she is a woman artist; Marcel Broodthaers open letter to Joseph Beuys questioning the relationship between artists and exhibiting institutions; and, just recently, critic Dave Hickey‘s public announcement of his “quitting” the art world.

lauren(at)laurenvhs.com

http://www.laurenvhs.com/2012/10/29/non-participation-call-for-submissions/

The project, Non-Participation, will be a collection of letters by artists, curators, and other cultural producers, written to decline their participation in events, or with organizations and institutions which they either find suspect or whose actions run counter to their stated missions. These statements are in effect protests against common hypocrisies among cultural organizations, and pose a positive alternative to an equally ubiquitous pressure to perform. At the heart of the project is the notion that what we say “no” to is perhaps more important than what we agree to.
