M.A.R. Manifest Artist Residency Award
•Application Deadline

Artists are invited to submit complete applications to Manifest's new Manifest Artist Residency program (MAR). Applications will be reviewed on a competitive basis.
The program is open for application by any serious emerging or established artist, including recent graduates from college art programs. It will benefit Manifest's community by providing exposure to the often unseen working space and practices of artists, serving to eliminate some boundaries to contemporary artmaking which currently may divide the everyday public from the fine visual arts.

The ideal candidate for the award of the program may be working in any media or genre, but would also make reasonable use of the available life-drawing sessions even if this is ancillary activity to their primary work. Suitability for teaching will be considered, but will not be a primary factor in the selection process.

Hans Ulrich Obrist and Independent Curators International search for the do it archive
•Application Deadline

To Submit Information

Please contact Alex Kleiman, Research Assistant, at or +1-212-254-8200 x126 with information on any publications, photographs, videos, and/or other textual documentation relating to any official or unofficial do it exhibitions you were involved in or organized.

ICI will continue accepting documentation on various do it iterations through April 2, 2012.

ICI is launching a call for documentation of do it exhibitions done spontaneously, residentially, on a small scale or a large scale—essentially any and all material from a realization of do it that may have been excluded from the official exhibition history. ICI and Obrist are aware that many independent and little-known iterations of the exhibition have taken place, and as the do-it-yourself ethos forms the foundation of the exhibition’s premise, material on these more impromptu or makeshift shows is of great import to the exhibition at large.

do it began in 1993 with a discussion in Paris between the artists Christian Boltanski and Bertrand Lavier with Obrist about whether an exhibition could be made from a series of instructions: How would an artist’s work be transformed if others made the artwork? To see what would happen, they invited 13 artists to send instructions, which were then translated into 9 different languages and circulated as a book.

Contemporary Curatorial Practice
•Application Deadline

Recognizing there are few opportunities for professionals to receive practical training and guidance while also holding down a job, the Curatorial Intensive is targeted toward self-motivated individuals—working independently or in institutions—who would benefit from a week of intensive conversations around the issues and questions that regularly arise for curators. Focusing on new models for curating and exhibition development, ICI’s annual summer Curatorial Intensive offers curators the opportunity to meet colleagues from around the world and share ideas on how to push the parameters of their practice.

Program Dates: July 8–17

Independent Curators International (ICI) produces exhibitions, events, publications, and training opportunities for diverse audiences around the world. A catalyst for independent thinking, ICI connects emerging and established curators, artists, and institutions, to forge international networks and generate new forms of collaboration. If you’re interested, please send a motivation letter and CV to Alan Quireyns, artistic director AIR Antwerpen, alan[@], before the 15th of April.

AIR Antwerpen is an international residence project for artists. In the former lockman's residence the project has obtained a fabulous post industrial location. It is located on the border between the old and the new harbour, close to the city centre.

AIR Antwerpen is more than a receptive workplace for artists from abroad. The organisation wishes to profile itself as a breeding ground for contemporary art, a place where art is developed and where artistic research is pursued.

AIR Antwerpen offers no exhibition platform for visual arts as such. The organisation is active within the national and international visual arts network and undertakes collaborative ventures which can result in research oriented co-productions.

Thanks to its setting in a city with a rich cultural history and an effervescent contemporary art scene, AIR Antwerpen is capable of initiating a spontaneous dialogue between past and present, and the local and global.

Call for projects exploring alternative tourism
•Application Deadline

We are looking for artists and proposals for a series of inter-disciplinary events, interventions, walks and tours that explore alternative forms of tourism (or respond to existing processes and hierarchies). Ideas can take the form of DIY toolkits for tourists to use on their own initiative, the creation of alternative infrastructure, or guided/performed events in which an artist or facilitator is actively involved. We are open to ideas that are ready to go and easy to facilitate (logistically and financially), and ideas that would require a period of on-site research and conceptual development (although we will only be able to invite a limited number of artists to Stuttgart). Projects should respond in some way to the curatorial focus outlined below (directly or indirectly). We also welcome self-reflective proposals that explore the problematic of our own intentions.

Each project will receive a minimum of between 100 and 500 Euros plus expenses. Artists that need time to develop their ideas will be invited to Stuttgart in May and June. Projects will be presented/enacted in Stuttgart between June 2012 and June 2013. A new website will document and bring together all of the selected activities.

A thousand lines of flight': Post-anarchism and Contemporary Art - for the Anarchist Studies Network Conference at Loughborough University
•Application Deadline

'Post-anarchism decentralizes the political movement, motions toward tactical rather than strategic action, brings anarchist thought into touch with a range of influences …and provides the foundation for a thousand lines of flight' (Duane Rouselle, 2011)

In 2003, David Graeber wrote about 'new anarchism' as a meshing of practice and theory which embraced horizontalist, open-ended experimental approaches to revolutionary vision and strategies. In this panel stream we ask – what does a post-anarchist art practice look like? What does it sound like? How and where does it function? We invite – and bring together - theorists and practitioners to offer contributions which explore these questions through discourse, practice, performance or intervention, experimentally, practically, gesturally, impossibly.

In the proposed conference we seek to examine the interests and influences which contributed to the development of Socialist Realism as a diverse and contested field of art from the 1930s to the 1980s. Participants will be invited to focus on aspects of Socialist Realist fine art production, evaluation and consumption in order to consider the ways in which artistic
conventions of pictorial representation were established, adapted and transformed to reflect the changing nature of the Soviet project. This approach will facilitate a shift away from the tendency to draw conclusions about Socialist Realism based on a limited number of canonical works of art and acclaimed artists, and will encourage a reappraisal of the diversity and
originality of creative output in its formal, stylistic and geographical variations.

Globalising the Local, Localising the Global: Globalisation, the Media, and Popular Culture in Africa
•Application Deadline

Lagos, Nigeria, 23-25 August 2012

This conference seeks to appraise the place and impact of globalisation on African media practice(s) and popular culture and how these have also participated in globalisation as a dialectical process for the construction of identity and re-invention of nationhood in Africa. In particular, the conference is interested in ways in which globalisation has engaged African media and popular culture as mediated processes through new media technologies and how they have in turn engaged globalisation. But the conference is also concerned with problematising the issues involved in the discourse on globalisation and its antinomies in relation to African media and popular culture. For instance, is globalisation an innocent, neutral phenomenon? Has globalisation fostered the dialogue or the clash of civilisations and cultures? Is it necessary for the enrichment of African media and popular culture?

This complex of issues will constitute the fulcrum of discussions during the conference. Submission of abstracts in 250-300 words is invited by 25 April 2012.

International Choreographic Captures Competition Call for Submissions
•Application Deadline

Are you a choreographer, dancer, filmmaker or multi-media artist looking to expand your scope?
Joint Adventures is calling for submissions for the fifth Choreographic Captures Competition, which encourages artists to explore "new aesthetic approaches and visual languages for choreography and film" in a 60-second-long "ad format" film.
The project is also supported by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, but is open to artists from all over the world.

The first Choreographic Captures Competition began with the motto "Art for those who didn't ask for it!" Though the audience of art shown in a museum or a gallery is an audience that has specifically sought out an artistic experience, the winning entries from Choreographic Captures will be shown at partner theaters between film ads. Though entries will have been shot in the form of a classic advertising clip - their intent is not to sell a product, but to make an artistic statement, or perhaps just to share a moment of beauty.

Winners will be awarded during the Munich Filmfest, taking place from June 29 to July 7, 2012.
