The HIVE / an adaptive arena for artistic projects
•Application Deadline
01.01.2013
"The Hive"- Narrative
Artists today are working in a new capacity--one that challenges the definition of art itself by introducing new ways for art to become a part of everyday life. Instead of making work in the context of exhibitions and objects for display, artists are focusing on the processes of collaboration and reciprocity with a goal of generating engagement through experiences, interactions or services.
“The Hive” explores this new arena by inviting artists to use the gallery as a lab rather than as an exhibition venue. Selected artists and creators will explore the outer reaches of art by creatively connecting with different audiences, and creating projects that concretely engage viewers in communication and interaction.
“The Hive” is a metaphor for the interconnected world that we live in today: a hive’s structure depends on the web of relationships that sustain it. These relationships ultimately exemplify collaboration in the working process...
The Hive is the next phase of EFA Project Space's former Artist/Organizer series.
EFA Project Space, a program of the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts is a collaborative cross-disciplinary arts venue founded on the belief that art is directly connected to the individuals that produce it, to the communities they are a part of, and to contemporary life and that by providing an arena for exploring these connections, we empower artists to forge new partnerships and encourage the expansion of ideas.
A Blade of Grass is a New York City-based non-profit that supports artists and organizations who innovate beyond the gallery and engage communities, and creates interdisciplinary programming to foster broader, more inclusive contemporary art dialogue.

Further information:
http://www.giffonifilmfestival.it/en/contest-forever-young.html
The Giffoni Film Festival (GFF) was born in 1971 from a Claudio Gubitosi idea: i.e. promoting and developing cinema for young people elevating it from the marginal position it had back in those days, and leading it where it belongs , e.g. a high quality genre capable of “penetrating” the market.
Over the years two things have turned out to be essential and are still the unreplaceable pillars of the Giffoni Film festival Concept:
* A giury exclusively made up of young people
* Setting the festival in the original small provincial town of Giffoni Valle Piana
Over the years the number of jurors has by far out grown 3000 and they come from over 50 different countries embracing all the world’s continents.

MEDIAWAVE Festival – “ANOTHER CONNECTION” expects the applications of artists, whose individual way of creation is independent of fashion streams; for whom technique is the means not the purpose; who attempt to create an individual film code set - whether they live in a minority group or in a less exposed part of the world. We want a festival where an abundance of original, new and particular views will play a major role instead of exotic productions and tricks; where artists with different ways of thinking and free thoughts will come together.

Oberhausen is now inviting submissions for the competitions in its 59th edition. They are looking for experiments, new angles and forms, works with their own visual language. For both national and international submissions the production date must now be after 1 January of the previous year; for the 59th Festival this means after 1 January 2012. Internet Memes and Visual Culture
•Application Deadline
15.01.2013
This special issue of the Journal of Visual Culture will organize a conversation among cultural scholars, artists, activists, journalists and Internet content producers regarding the social, historical, and aesthetic significance of Internet memes. Our move to “take memes seriously” as communicative and aesthetic objects is especially timely, as memes' linguistic tropes, visual styles and means of transmission gain increasing visibility beyond their origins in online subcultural spaces such as 4chan or 9gag.
Potential contributors are thus encouraged to incorporate visual and conceptual experiments intended to elucidate the meme form, performatively and materially replicating the phenomenon under study.
The deadline for submission of proposals/abstracts is 15 January 2013.
For the submission guidelines, please check :
http://www.lainenooney.com/1/post/2012/11/memesvisualculture.html
The term "meme", a portmanteau of mimesis and gene, was minted in 1976 by British ethologist and evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins. Dawkins proposed the meme as a “unit of cultural transmission,” a self-perpetuating cultural phenomenon analogous to the gene as a replicator of biological data.
The designation “meme” identifies digital objects that riff on a given visual, textual or auditory form. For a digital object to become a meme, it must be appropriated, re-coded, and slotted back into the Internet infrastructures it came from—memes require continued user adaptation. Thus, memes are co-constitutive with the user practices of creative (re)production that are default modes of communicative interaction on major social media platforms such as Facebook, Tumblr, Reddit, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube.

Call for Papers: Rare Books and Manuscripts Section & Art Libraries Section
•Application Deadline
18.01.2013
The papers may:
describe new discovery tools or methods
demonstrate innovative ways of managing large visual collections
highlight new areas of research that have resulted from analyzing and using images in innovative ways
Aims of the Session: The session should explore various innovative tools and methods designed to help researchers find and use images that are hidden in books and large cultural heritage collections.
Format: The Open Session will last for three hours. Speakers are restricted to 20 minutes. Afterwards there will be time for questions and comments from the audience. All seven official IFLA languages are admitted for the presentations (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Russian and Spanish). Papers in English are preferred because no simultaneous translation is planned for this session.
http://conference.ifla.org/ifla79/calls-for-papers/images-lost-and-found-innovative-approaches-to-discovery-and-use-of-visual-m
Rare books, manuscripts, and special collections contain millions of images that remain largely 'hidden' to researchers because they are not catalogued individually. These include woodcuts, illuminations, emblems, drawings, sketches, paintings, and photographs, all of which are critical to a wide range of research in the humanities. In fact, many researchers focus solely on these images, and not on the texts that contain them. A similar problem exists with large image collections found in a library's special collections, because they are too massive to be catalogued individually. These, too, are difficult to find and use.

Toolkit Festival Venice call for entries
•Application Deadline
21.01.2013
The participation is free and open to artists of every nationality of age between 20 and 35 years old. The deadline for the subscription is January 21st 2013. As previously stated, only works that explore and realize – with the contribution of technology – the theme of the interaction between artist, exhibition space and observer will be admitted to the contest. We will therefore accept only interactive interventions such as: Installations, Audio/Visual Performance and Live Media.
Further information about the application :
http://www.toolkitfestival.com/call-for-submissions-2/
The title for the edition of Toolkit Festival 2013 is “Contemplative Pathways” ; to give a global point of view, to show a vision of what occurs in the same time as performer and observer in the interactive area. To show the public an action, often uninhibited within the opera, to bring back its vision, lost in the perfomative act. The observer is invited to create with his own presence , to inhibit his view on the comprehension of singular elements. Often the artist finds himself becoming the observer in front of the fulfillment of the opera. The inquiry we ask to explore is to keep in consideration all these landscapes, re-elaborating a further stage of the space “in execution” to create once again an image, a kind of observer of itself.

An International Competitive Exhibit of Works of New Media
Art and Science are intertwined throughout history. New media in art arise from a variety of places– sometimes the artist's lab, sometimes the scientist's and engineer's, and other times from someplace completely unexpected. Inevitably this is driven by curiosity, a need for new means of expressing complex ideas, and often enough the simple desire to create something novel. As part of its ongoing effort to survey various approaches to art making, expression, and creative discovery Manifest offers CODE D. as an invitation to artists to share works of New Media. We have no predetermined expectations for what constitutes 'new' media. While the title of the project plays off the concept of 'digital', that is by no means the defining parameter for works to be considered. Works submitted to this peer-juried exhibit may be of any media, style, or genre, and may represent New Media in any number of widely interpreted ways.

The Impossible Project at Reverse Space
•Application Deadline
30.01.2013
The Impossible Project is an open call for creative minds, to present and discuss their projects or proposals in a casual open talk form.
Art practices are not only related to the art-work made at the studio; artists create projects that bring their practice into many different settings than the formal exhibition space.
These projects, brainchild of creative minds, usually go beyond reality and making capabilities. At this point the project becomes the “art-work”.
We believe that a public presentation of the project can
be an influential part of the creative process and act as an opportunity for these ideas to grow. For this reason, these gatherings of creative minds will be benefitial for all.
Selected submissions will be presented at Reverse Space on Wednesday February 13, 20 and 27 at 7:30 pm
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Submit a short description and images of the project. Images should be no bigger than 1mb.
In one paragraph please answer: Why is it important for you to share this project?
Link to website or blog with samples of your recent work.
CV or Bio.
Include technical specs for your presentation.
Reverse Space will select 1 artist for each session.
Submit all materials to info[@]reversespace.org
Deadline: January 30th
Selected projects will be notify by February 4th
Note: Artists are encouraged to promote the event. Invite your friends, let’s build community !!!
