Curatorial Travel Grants to the United States - Terra
•Application Deadline

01.03.2013

To encourage and enrich international partnerships between art museums, and to enable curators outside the United States both to learn more about historical American art and to develop exhibitions of American art at their home institutions, the foundation offers two types of Exhibition Research and Development Grants: Convening Grants for Internationally Collaborative Exhibitions and Curatorial Travel Grants to the United States. Applications will be judged competitively on an annual basis beginning in spring 2011.

An institution may apply for a convening and/or travel grant even if it has applied separately, or will be applying separately, for general exhibition support for the same project. Proposals for convening and/or travel grants and proposals for general exhibition support are considered on their own merits; grant approval in one program does not guarantee grant approval in the other.

http://www.terraamericanart.org/grants/exhibition-research-programs/

Curatorial Travel Grants to the United States

These travel grants allow international curators to travel to the United States to research and develop specific exhibition ideas about any aspect of historical American art (except architecture, conservation, or film) by visiting public and private art collections, archives, libraries, and meeting with U.S.-based curators.

Only curators permanently employed by a museum outside the United States will be considered at this time.

Applicant must detail the exhibition idea(s) to be researched, resources to be consulted in the United States, and the use of any funding. Preference will be given to exhibition ideas with innovative approaches that will result in new scholarship and to a clear and well-researched itinerary that includes meeting specialists.

Inter-format Symposium 2013
•Application Deadline

01.03.2013

In a time where heritage, sustainability and ecology increasingly cross the path of tourism, artists working in remote contexts and tourists often share the observation of similar cultural objects: iconic landscape sites, vernacular culture and authentic artefacts, invented traditions and nostalgia.

One effect of this condition, as Miwon Kwon highlights in the essay “The Wrong Place”, is that the increasing mobility of the art system, involving both centres and remote situations, has led to romanticising the image of the cultural worker. The symposium aims at bringing into question correspondences between artistic practices and critical tourism in a trans-disciplinary context. In contemporary artistic practices, do displacements take the form of a romantic expedition or are they based on hospitality and exchange? ...

KINETICA (movement in art)
•Application Deadline

11.03.2013

Media: Manifest will consider any work that can reasonably be understood to either 1) incorporate literal movement as part of its form (moving parts, whether mechanical, automated, human-powered, etc.), or 2) depict or in some other way include movement as a subject or theme of otherwise non-moving and non-kinetic art. Sculpture, painting, drawing, assemblage, printmaking, photography, video, etc., are all possibly valid media. There are no media restrictions other than that the submissions must be 'visual art', design, engineering, or a combination of scientific/artistic creations. There are no size restrictions beyond what can fit into Manifest's gallery spaces. A general floor plan is available here.

How to apply?

An International Competitive Exhibit Exploring Movement in Art (or design)
Seeking kinetic works as well as non-kinetic works representing movement

All artists included in the project receive a complimentary copy of the full-color companion exhibit catalog.

Sometimes we take movement for granted. The fact that the Earth is rotating at 1000 miles per hour, or hurtling through space around the sun at 67,000 miles per hour goes practically unnoticed by everyone, except perhaps when one stops to appreciate just why the sun rises and sets, or why we experience seasons. Yet everything about our lives, and life on Earth, is inextricably linked to movement of one form or another.

http://www.digitalartweeks.ethz.ch/web/DAW13/WindowZoosCall

For the exhibition "Window Zoos", the DAW International is looking for a few additional artworks that use Augmented Reality and Geo Tagged images. The project "WindowZoos" is inspired by an image of a car driving down Singapore’s legendary Orchard Road with its windshield plastered with stickers of popular cartoon characters. In keeping with the idea of the car and the experience it provides those inside it, a concept was developed to transform Orchard Road into a virtual exhibition by overlaying the entire road with geo-tagged media common to game technologies and augmented reality systems. Like the car's windshield, participants' mobile device screens become windows onto the virtual world that is emerging around us, expanding our notion of what constitutes public space and how art can be exhibited.

Protests as Events / Events as Protests
•Application Deadline

28.03.2013

Leeds, UK, 12 June 2013
A one day symposium for academics and activists will be organised by the International Centre for Research in Events, Tourism and Hospitality (ICRETH) and Leeds Metropolitan University in Leeds, UK. The symposium entitled Protests as Events / Events as Protests will be held on 12 June 2013.
The organizers take as their starting point Paul Chatterton's argument that "acknowledging that protest encounters are emotionally laden, relational, hybrid, corporeal and contingent, possibilities open up for breaking the silences that divide us and overcoming ontological divisions such as activist and non-activist." This symposium aims to involve conversations between activists and non-activists, as well as academics as activists in order to explore the complex construction of protests as events / events as protests. They propose an innovative coming together of activists and academics to build bridges, initiate debate and develop future research agendas.

This call thus seeks papers that focus on one or more of the following topics:
Conceptualisations of protests as events
The academic/activist interface
Timings and rhythms of protests
Discursive constructions of protests
Protest and political tourism
Mobile assemblages and protests
Embodiments of protest events
Sustaining protests in the face of cultural changes
Protests and sports events
Critical hospitality and protests
Governance and the governmentalities of protest events

The organizers are seeking proposals for papers, abstracts of no more than 300 words should be emailed to d.carl[@]leedsmet.ac.uk by 10 March 2013.
For further information please visit the symposium's blog at http://protestsandevents.wordpress.com/ or contact Daniela Carl on +44 (0) 113 -812 8541 or Dr Ian Lamond on +44 (0)113 -812 3816

In addition to the required artistic, academic or respectively educational quality, the project application has to point out, that the participating project partners share the financial and thematic responsibility and cooperate at eye level. Special attention is paid to projects, which enable long-term networks between the involved artists and project partners. Hence the Allianz Cultural Foundation only supports projects but no institutions. The Allianz Cultural Foundation focuses on particular regions within Europe. Aside from the countries of Central and South-eastern Europe the focal point of the next years lies on the Mediterranean area.

Allianz Fundation- Project Grants 2014
•Application Deadline

The criteria for funding focus on contemporary concepts of every genre and media which prove new ideas in the arts, culture and education. The projects may also be workshops, whereas the active knowledge transfer and the exchange of experiences between the participants are valued just as the result itself. Furthermore, sponsored projects should on the long run appeal to a larger audience than only professionals.

Aesthetic – Responsibility – Drones
•Application Deadline

31.03.2013

2-7th of May 2013, Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz, Weissensee Art Academy
Berlin

Free entry to public events! Invited participants will be granted
travel/accommodation. Registration to the workshops by March 31st @
http://www.migaa.eu

An aesthetic of contemporary life inhales new relationship to objects,
and the attached to us object changes the perspective to it. If the
object for Marshall McLuhan in 60s was an extension of man, for Vilém
Flusser in 80s the man became an extension of “apparatus.” The roles
have been switched literally and physically: since then machine is the
one who creates and man is the one who serves it. Who in the changing
world will be dictating the aims? Who will be responsible if the
unmanned vehicle will kill a man?

The Weissensee Art Academy Berlin is hosting Migrating Art Academies new
laboratory “Aesthetic – Responsibility – Drones”. It will be held at
Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz Berlin. Emerging artists and students from
any academies are welcome to discuss contemporary aesthetics and its
responsibilities within a world related to technology controlled by
others and by unknown technology.

The six days long lab will offer discussions on the basis of texts by
notable thinkers (a.o. Judith Butler, Christoph Menke), working about
aesthetic responsibilities in social gaming and experimenting with print
making as well as with specifics in sound and electronics.

The Mamuta Art and Media Center, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem School of the Arts at the Faculty of the Humanities, Arts, Technology, Media and Science Interfaces Seminar, Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design - Department of Screen-Based Arts, the Jerusalem Cinematheque, and the Jerusalem Film Festival.

The organizing committee invites scholars and artists to submit proposals for individual papers, organized panels, screenings, and roundtable discussions related to the theme of the conference: “Autonomy & Anatomy of the Moving Image: Video & Experimental Cinema in the Last Decade.”

The conference will explore the ways in which developments in new technologies have turned the Internet into a new platform where the digital/network platform replaces the more traditional support - the tape.

We invite papers that address the narrative and aesthetic developments that are made possible by mechanisms of network and digital media: deconstruction, interaction, randomization, multi-layeredness, browser dependence, real-time broadcast and editability; alteration, combination, and incorporation of various media into video (medium or video elements within them). Youtube, cell phone, and ipad video-culture on the one hand, and the availability of cutting-edge technologies for independent artists and amateurs, on the other hand, have dramatically altered the language, use, possibilities and ways of promotion of moving-image works.

SURVIVAL 11 Art Review
•Application Deadline

31.03.2013

SURVIVAL 11 Art Review / Xawery Dunikowski Boulevard, Wrocław / 21 – 30 June 2013
http://www.survival.art.pl/

The SURVIVAL Art Review has been held in Wrocław for 11 years, each time exploring a new space and a new set of notions connected with it. So far, SURVIVAL’s artists have worked at the Central Railway Station in Wrocław, in an air-raid shelter, at a city stadium, in a park in the city centre and in post-Soviet barracks. Works by both beginning and acknowledged Polish contemporary artists have been presented, including Dorota Nieznalska, Jerzy Kosałka, Rafał Jakubowicz and Stanisław Dróżdż.

We would like to invite you to take part in the competition! Applications should be sent to survivalwro[@[gmail.com by 31 March 2013.

The content of the competition part of SURVIVAL 11 Art Review will revolve around universal notions concerning water: as a symbol of chaos, instability, changeability, as well as transformation, healing, spiritual and physical rebirth, vitality. In the context of Wrocław, it will be particularly important to subject the destructive powers of the element to artistic interpretation, to investigate natural disasters – floods, which largely determine the specificity of water-man-city relations.

The artists and the curators will refer to an array of notions and phenomena connected with the variety and multitude of forms water can take in urban conditions. Stagnant and flowing water, a mixture of water and air, water and land, puddles, ponds, dams, wells, fountains – each form of the element offers material and inspiration for aesthetic work and interpretation.

The motto of the eleventh edition of SURVIVAL Art Review is ‘We’re sailing!’. This sentence was uttered by one of the characters in Roman Polański’s ‘Knife in the Water’ – a young man who, holding on to a spar of a sailing boat, literally ‘walks’ on water. His enthusiastic exclamation ‘We’re sailing!’ was met with the following response by a woman sitting comfortably on the deck: ‘Sure, for sailing’s sake’. ‘We’re sailing!’ is an expression of affirmation of the world, its processual dynamism which lets us believe that ‘everything is possible’. Its opposite, the cynical comment ‘Sure, for sailing’s sake’, expresses the speaker’s tiredness of life and her conformist attitude.
