Summer flagship exhibition ILLUSION | Science Gallery
•Application Deadline

01.04.2013

Calling all creative conjurers, optical illusionists, whizzards and mathemagicians, Science Gallery is seeking proposals for projects for our upcoming summer flagship exhibition ILLUSION.

"Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one."
Albert Einstein

Curated by Richard Wiseman, Prof of Public Understanding of Psychology at University of Hertfordshire where he researches an eclectic range of topics including luck, self-help, illusion and persuasion, ILLUSION is a curated, open call exhibition exploring the motivations and mechanisms of sensory deception. What we perceive is often radically different from the reality of what our eyes observe. For example, the classic coin disappearing magic trick exploits this through a phenomenon known as retention vanish. A lag in the brain's perception of motion causes a viewer to see a coin in the left hand for a few seconds after it is no longer there. This after image is because the visual neurons are still firing and our perception of reality lags about one hundredth of a second behind behind actual reality.

We’re interested in receiving proposals on a wide variety of topics including:

Visual illusions and illusions based on colour
Close up magic/ illusions that could be delivered by Science Gallery mediators
Illusions involving sense of taste, touch and hearing
Illusions that occur around the city – park railing, city trains and buses
Illusions that involve performances – magicians, street performers etc
Illusion of the passage of time
Mass participation experiments that involve some kind of illusion
Illusion through technology – virtual reality goggles or gloves that cause you to perceive something that is not there
Exhibits/ works that are based on classic illusions such as Camera Obscura and Ames room
Social and cultural perception or illusion – experiments or exhibits that illustrate our tendency towards stereotypes and bias based on what we see
Workshop ideas that enable visitors to create their own illusions to take away after their visit
Illusions that rely on distraction and manipulation of the attention of the viewer

Direct Grants to Individual Artists / Harpo Foundation
•Application Deadline

05.04.2013

Criteria
In its grantmaking, Harpo Foundation prioritizes projects that advance and cross the boundaries of visual media and artistic disciplines. Proposals are evaluated on the basis of the quality of the artist’s work, the potential to expand aesthetic inquiry, and the strength of its relationship to the foundation’s priority to provide support to visual artists who are under recognized by the field.

Funding
The foundation awards between 10-15 grants annually and funding decisions are made by the Board of Directors. As a general guideline, requests should not exceed $10,000 per year. Grants made to non-profit organizations must be used for direct project costs related to artist honoraria, commissioning fees, production costs, and travel.

G.A.S. - station Berlin : open call for contributions
•Application Deadline

12.04.2013

The striving for perfection is generally viewed in a positive light. Yet what is perfectness? Is it the attainment of complete congruence between the mental concept of an ideal and its actual implementation? In the discipline of mathematics, perfectness is attainable – e.g. in the requirement of conformity between a set and its derivative. Yet can there also be “perfectness” in any other sense? Which ideal conceptions are concealed behind different kinds of perfectionsim? Does the urge for perfection – and for the avoidance of mistakes associated with it – also have an effect on society and the human psyche that needs to be critically examined?

http://www.2gas-station.net/pages/engl/applformengl.html

The concept of G.A.S-station is a research project on the development and exploitation of artistic and scientific aspects and also a platform to develop and test new forms of art presentation, mediation and publication. The projects we initiate annually are designed on specific topics as well as cross-divisional.

At the same time, and linked to the above, organisational philosophies are changing in and outside the art world. Who is it for?

• Associates at Open School East will be artists who have in recent years completed a BA, MA or have taken alternative routes into art-making. The programme is for anyone interested in thinking critically about what it means to develop a shared building and to work in collaboration with individuals and groups within a neighbourhood.

Open School East is interested in creating a dedicated temporary community of artists with wide-ranging practices, interests, experiences and skills, who will be selected accordingly.

Call for Film/Video Programs: Exuberant Politics
•Application Deadline

21.04.2013

An exuberant politics is exhortative, celebratory, evocative.

It is foot-stomping, lung-splitting, booty-shaking.

It’s in your face, your backyard, your neighborhood, your watershed, your continent.

It’s planetary, and it’s right here.

It is direct, but it likes to dance.

It’s exuberant, and it starts with you.

“Exuberant Politics” is issuing a call for film/video programmers, activist archivists, and DIY curators to propose 70-90 minute programs of moving image work featuring exuberant, vivacious, and creative responses to historical and contemporary political issues.

“Exuberant Politics” is issuing a call for film/video programmers, activist archivists, and DIY curators to propose 70-90 minute programs of moving image work featuring exuberant, vivacious, and creative responses to historical and contemporary political issues.

Proposed programs could map a historical arc or be based around specific topics, like “exuberant pacifism,” or “rocking reproductive righteousness.” We are particularly interested in proposals that combine projects by politically-engaged artists’ with creative activism undertaken by people who do not identify as artists. Programs may include performance or protest actions documented by video, as well as work taking film/video as its primary medium.

A total of three programs will be selected to screen at the University of Iowa in Fall 2013, with potential for additional screenings to be arranged in consultation with programmers and artists. Selected programmers will receive a $250 honorarium and up to $400 for screening fees.

“Exuberant Politics” is a yearlong series of programs organized by University of Iowa faculty and Iowa City artists and arts organizations. The “Exuberant Politics” film series is funded by the University of Iowa Museum of Art.

Proposals should include a 250 word description of the program, a tentative list of works (with short synopses and runtimes), and a 250 word narrative bio of the programmer. Send to exuberantpolitics@gmail.com by April 21, 2013. Submissions will be reviewed, selected, and notified by May 5.

AFTER WORK | ART ON THE UNDERGROUND | BERLIN
•Application Deadline

24.04.2013

The aim of the announcement of “Nach der Arbeit (After work)”, this year’s open international competition as part of the “Kunst im Untergrund (Art underground)” project, is the artistic treatment of underground railway stations in Berlin. The competition investigates the artistic communication and intervention potential of the medium of posters that are to be installed on the poster panels (on the walls behind the railway tracks) in certain underground stations. The competition makes reference to the beginnings of the artistic poster competitions that transformed the Alexanderplatz underground station into an exhibition space with poster installations from the 1950s onwards (see http://ngbk.de/alexanderplatz/home.html).
In contrast with these historical competitions, the radius within the city and the underground network will be significantly expanded with the present project and dedicated artistic works will be sought that are both location-specific and context-specific.

Call for proposals for an open art competition
Task: Installation of poster-form art in an underground station in Berlin. Idea: Connection with the location (the underground station or its surroundings). Additionally: underground rail, railway station, transport, mobility etc., as well as an underground station as a site for interventions. Medium: Posters on the walls behind the tracks. Project result: 15 project realisations at 15 Berlin underground stations in two phases in 2013.

Submissions: By 24 April 2013

•Application Deadline

30.04.2013

Each manuscript is reviewed by at least two experts. The reviewers are selected according to the methodological scope and the topic of the manuscripts. After the reviewing process the review reports and – if the manuscript has generally been accepted – possibly also revision requirements are sent to the author. This process can take up to four months.

Looking for a Mirror
•Application Deadline

30.04.2013

Looking for a Mirror will be revolving around a generation that perceives itself through the iconography created by Nan Goldin. It scarcely requires to be said that her people have been our people and her god our god since the 1970s. Her visual tropes have become our daily bread and inalienable from the way we experience life and lovers and sofas and cigarettes, and at Convulsion we believe that an independently produced photography book would furnish an adorable survey of how we ended up arriving at this point. Localize Zug um Zug | festival for city, culture and art in Potsdam, Germany
•Application Deadline

30.04.2013

“Bahnhof Pirschheide” offers different surroundings for stagings in the internal, as well as the outdoor space and in the small surrounding structures.

We look for intentions for following environments:
– former ticket hall
– walled descending tunnel entrance
– outside wall on courtyard for (permanent) wall design
– station forecourt
– former kiosk & former snack stand “Grilletta”

A “video moving system” with up to 12 beamers is available for productions.
We look for content for on item on the program or the whole duration of the
exhibition. For an impression of the visual possibilities:
www.vms-at.com/content/videos

This year the charitable association LOCALIZE e.V. will – for the sixth time already – take possession of a forgotten and inaccessible building and area for a short period of time to revive it with contemporary art and a diverse program. Installations and debates, concerts and bars, films and performances re-enact an environment and create a place for encounters and open exchange.

LOCALIZE acts on the edge between institutional high culture and science,
as well as Potsdam‘s off-culture and unites actors and visitors of this wide range.

The game, a metaphor for society, allows us to question daily witting and unwitting decisions.
