Paz explores the human need, to be prepared for potential violence. In her work she deals with the stress resulting from this in everyday life and human interactions through various scenes.

Silhouettes of a mountainous area at night, blue smoky clouds, a small group of human beings with Mickey Mouse ears hitting each other for fun or perhaps actually striking each other for real? Cone shaped, the light from military helicopters quietly and coolly glide over the scene.

The scenes refer to social and military occurrences, without indicating a singular incident. Sharon Paz lives in Israel. It does not seem far off to read IS THIS A GOOD DAY TO START A WAR in relation to the specific situation of her country. In fact, where else can one observe war ships and planes from a beach towel and then go to work?

In composition, in choreography of the actions and in the course of the movements the animation resembles computer games. Paz keeps her imagery transparent for horror scenarios.

Wenn wir von Reisen durch das Weltall träumen, vergessen wir häufig,

_the space that we can observe is as big as 450 million light years distance. If we are planning to leave and bring our planet out with us when the sun fades out, we have to discover immortality. Besides if we are planning to travel on the purpose of going beyond the edge space that we know and discovering new life forms, if we are planning to travel together that long, we should be good friends for 450 million light years.

_we will continue to illuminate the secrets of the universe.

"Hello", "I was here" and names written over and over again; what
looks like an abstract drawing from afar, emerges on closer
examination as a collection of eclectic voices. For years Ceal
Floyer collected the pieces of paper customers used to test pens at
stationary shops, ultimately creating her work Works on Paper
(2009). Displayed together a written babble emerges, questioning the
ideas around authorship in art as well as asking what determines the
public and the private sphere. The unwittingly created works on
Paper bear their authors' appropriating insignia thus undermining
the generated readymade...

"The Augmented Flaws questions different aspects of current social and economic power strategies in global society. Using the narrative structure of postcolonial theory, the curator Shaheen Merali analyses actual modes of representation and image making in a global context of economic migration, forced labour and the marketing of violence and war. For him, these and other so-called augmented flaws result in an actual worsening of human relationships, leading him to doubt „Do we really care enough to question any longer or do we casually adjust within the re-fashioned times, where even potent human tragedies are often reduced to slogans on T-Shirts worn with Birkenstocks“."

11th International İstanbul Biennial
September 12 - November 8, 2009

What Keeps Mankind Alive?

The 11th International İstanbul Biennial takes its title from the
song 'Denn wovon lebt der Mensch?', translated into English as 'What
Keeps Mankind Alive?'. The song closes the second act of the play The
Threepenny Opera, written in 1928 by Bertolt Brecht, in collaboration
with Elisabeth Hauptmann and Kurt Weill. Based on Brecht's assertion
that 'a criminal is a bourgeois and a bourgeois is a criminal,' the
play set out to revolutionise theatre as both an artistic form and a

This project sets off to visit and to receive reciprocal visits in spite of the hostility of these states towards each other, to critically break down the physical, political and intellectual obstacles created by the borders. In this respect, a shared cultural value that makes borders meaningless, the tradition of reciprocal visit forms the basis of our project..."
