"The exhibition focuses on van der Weijde’s book published by Roma Publications by the same name. Siedlung is a photographic journey through different German housing projects built as part of Nazi 'Siedlungspolitik'...

Erik van der Weijde, born 1977, is a photographer who regularly self-publishes his photographs in carefully crafted small edition books and zines. His works often focus around themes of architecture. The book Siedlung was published by Roma Publications in 2008. He lives and works in Natal, Brazil."

Verholzen (Lignification)/Susanne Ring, From Another World / Christiane Ensslen

Galerie Axel Obiger

Brunnenstraße 29
10119 Berlin
http://www.axelobiger.com

Berlin

Ends 20.03.2010

"Memories, dreams and desires are expressed in the seemingly archaic works of Susanne Ring. Under the title VERHOLZEN (LIGNIFICATION), she combines her figures and images into a large wall ensemble. The title refers to a paradox: the process of lignification involves the death of cells and their transmutation into a resistant but dead material. This transformation is fundamental for growth and ensures ultimate survival.

Painter Christiane Ensslen lives and works in Weimar and has been invited by Galerie Axel Obiger as a guest artist. Her title “From Another World” refers to her childhood experiences in the DDR (former East Germany), which stand in stark contrast to the reality of her life today. She captures this tension in colourful oil paintings, in which precisely construed forms alternate with free-floating painterly compositions."

"Exploring physical and metaphysical ideas of illumination, “Resplendency” gathers artists who go beyond utilizing contemporary light technologies to make statements on what, conceptually, light references within today’s society. From LEDs to light boxes to phosphorous pigments to neon to projection - the works in this exhibit offer different renditions of what meaning is latent in having light, giving light, reflecting light, finding light and being enlightened."

Berlin

Ends 20.03.2010

"Figurative scenes from the daily grind dominate the paintings of Max
Diel. He finds his motives on ongoing excursions through cities, small
and big, and various landscapes. The exhibition American Beauty shows
works capturing memories and impressions of a 6 week journey to the US,
visiting Washington, D.C., New York and San Francisco. The paintings
reflect an intensive observation and examination of everyday life in
America, and recollect the dramatic light in all scenes - a consequence
of the geographic areas. Noticeable in this new body of works, is the
use of color -- a much brighter palette, as well as a sense of
airiness, let the paintings appear less morbid and less cumbersome."

"The focus of the project Lens Free –THE EXPANDED VIEW (Camera Obscura Works) is an investigation of visual perception and – as an extension of this theme – the discrepancy between mechanical perception and emotional, personal experience. The Lens Free photographers do not show the world as it is, but how they would like to see it. Lens Free is a loose grouping of photographic artists who achieve their work by using a camera obscura."

REMAP BERLIN by Marco Cadioli opening in virtual Berlin

The exhibition hall “Altes Museum” in the virtual world Twinity will open the exhibition: Remap Berlin by Marco “Manray” Cadioli

Berlin

Ends 21.03.2010

“Remap Berlin” spreads a thin geographical virus in Google Earth and deals with different levels of reality. The project introduces a series of b&w photographs shot in Twinity, a mirror world that reproduces a realistic 3D replica of Berlin. The photos shot in Twinity, are then geo-localized in Google maps, re-mapped from virtual to real and positioned in the exact point where they have been shot in the mirror world. Once uploaded in the photo sharing community Panoramio, the pictures are mixed up with other ones shot in the same geographical point from real life users. Many of these pictures have been selected by Google and can now be found as “Popular photos in Google Earth”: this became a little geographical virus, parts of our memories of the real world.

11 artists “in transit” from Canada, the USA, Greece, Chile, Mexico, P.R. China and Germany from the postgraduate program Public Arts and New Artistic Strategies at the Bauhaus University will exhibit work based on the idea of memory and the dissolution of the “white cube”. The “white cube” can be considered a monumentalized term from a globalized Eurocentric perspective on contemporary art. As public artists, the participants have explored the elasticity of the terms's edges, testing for abstract potential, flexibility, and mobility.

This project was developed in relation to the question of how an art space might continue after it is (re)moved from its precarious position within existing architectural structures in a rapidly transforming urban environment: as an idea, a concept, or actual mobile space, possibly floating, disembodied, into the future.

"The exhibition EARLY YEARS at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin wanders through the field of institutional self-reflection. It searches for terms fit to describe the emergence of a museum of art in the present, actual artistic, political, and social discourses. The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw requested for this exhibition the collaboration from artists, with whom it had worked so far, in its pioneering days. The Museum shared its anxieties with the group, and they reciprocated with their share of expectations towards the new institution.

Constructivism, Zero, Minimal Art, Concept and Seriality. Starting
with 1950s predecessors – such as Josef Albers, Norbert Kricke and
Siegfried Cremer – the show considers abstract art developments in
the cities of Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Krefeld, Stuttgart, Berlin and
Munich, but also looks at contiguous Swiss positions. About 60 works
by 28 artists are being presented, all developing a specifically
German Minimalism in the period from 1954 to 1974 in various media
(sculpture, painting, film and drawing)."

"UNIVERSITAS - Light-Orbiter
diameter 2,20 m (7,35 ft), 40 solar cells, created 2007, realized 2009
A blue ring turns slowly in space. With changing beam of light flares its iridescent surface from silicon crystals. The light-weight construction embodies pure function and associates airship structures and outer space habitats. Noiseless weightlessness dominate the scope. The light orbiter decelerate the speed of light into a contemplative orbit and transfers it as positive load to the viewer."
