Theme
Independently writing: from Samizdat to the Zines

Starting from a historical overview about the soviet Samizdat during the Cold War, we will together try to understand, what is a Zine and why it is fundamental in our current world in comparison to the communist society. Even though during the Samizdat movement the circulation of independent magazines was not permitted, nowadays the Internet gives us only apparently infinite possibilities of distribution.
We will talk about censorship today and we will essay topics for an ideal contemporary Zine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samizdat

Some starting points of discussion for the ideal creation of a fanzine/magazine are:

Why a Zine nowadays?
Which is our audience?
Which layout does it need in order to have a congruent diffusion?
Which contents are suitable for our society today?

Ends 26.11.2011

This international group exhibition is a visual exploration of how the left and right side of the brain functions. The exhibition space consists of two connected rooms, each one representing a hemisphere. The artists have implemented a variety of art practices to express either the linear tendencies of the left side or the more intuitive processes of the right side.

We are pleased to present a group of new works by London-based artist Barbara Nicholls. The Exhibition was initiated by Doris Knöfel.
These six pieces represent a further development of Nicholls’ long-standing interest in territorial, archaeological and conceptual structures, and in the artwork as a physical and metaphorical generator of meaning. Having been produced through a process of cutting into, patching up, and again cutting through the dense material of the boards from which they are made, these hybrid works – part drawing and painting, part cut-out and assemblage – occupy that curious zone between the apparent flatness of painting and the overt three-dimensionality of sculpture. Their allusive relation to the latter is evident in the fact that in some of these pieces a large sinuous form has been removed from the plane of the surface and reinserted slightly out of true, or perhaps even been flipped right round, an action to which the exhibition’s title partly refers.

Reconsidering Roma

Aspects of Roma and Sinti Life in Contemporary Art

Venue:
Kunstquartier Kreuzberg / Studio1,
Mariannenplatz 2, 10997 Berlin

Ends 11.12.2011

The exhibition presents works by international artists of Roma and non-Roma heritage. These works broach the topic of stereotyped perspectives in representations of Sinti and Roma as well as the current and historical situation of Roma in Europe. A further point of focus is the Nazi Holocaust against Sinti and Roma, which to this day is still barely embedded in public consciousness.

For the eighth exhibition at Essays and Observations we have asked the artists Albrecht Schäfer, Jeremiah Day, Karolin Meunier, Lucy Powell, Mario Asef, and Øystein Aasan to demonstrate artistically their positions on abstraction. In addition, Dale Holmes has agreed to redact certain conjectures that we put together as part of the preparation for this exhibition, and also to contribute his own text on the topic. Dale Holmes is currently working on a PhD on abstraction. This exhibition forms the basis for an ongoing discussion on this theme. What do we today understand as abstraction? Is a photograph abstract, in that it isolates a moment in time? Is a found object abstract, in that it is extracted from its everyday context? How wide do we want to spread the range of the term abstraction? Or should we constrain this range, in order to make the term more accurate and less arbitr

Ends 02.09.2015

You're invited to follow the amazing global art initiative 'FRAGILE - global performance chain journey' in which more than 750 artists from 62 countries are participating.
Can one fragile object, in times of email, chat and mobility, pass one time all around the world safely – from hand to hand, charging itself with stories and people? Will it be the same when it returns?

For the project, more than 750 artists from all over the world work together in one same action: all will carry one fragile object step by step around the planet.
The journey of the object and the works the artists will conceive during the project will be communicated on the website and in regular newsletters.
