The wisest thing about failures is learning from them, the most common, however, is repeating them. So here we are, six international curators making the sequel “FAIL! Again” to our first group exhibition “FAIL" this April. We are back to examine the realms of failure, to disrupt accepted knowledge, to convert comfortable certainties into questions or even successes and to learn wisdom from failure.

Taking Samuel Beckett’s advice, we will “Fail. Fail again. Fail better”. Hence, the title “FAIL AGAIN!” of this second-part exhibition where we continue to expand the broad spectrum of failure. This time, however, we sharpen its ample, ambiguous definitions and zoom in to the more intimate face of this sensitive subject challenging visitors to do the same; introspect and reevaluate.

Turkey - Istanbul

Ends 22.06.2013

This new work by Nancy Atakan investigates the extreme routes taken by contemporary individuals and societies to become attractive to others whether it be the opposite sex or foreign investors. Women and men undergo surgery to alter their physical appearance. Politicians promote urban transformation to attract global investment. Plastic surgeons add to and take away from human bodies like sculptors molding clay. Urban developers thoughtlessly demolish communities and ways of life for profit. Societies that place high value on beauty and youth continuously change, disguise and eliminate the ‘Old’ built structure or human body. Violence of this type can be physical or psychological. Atakan uses a variety of techniques including silkscreen, photography, digital prints and digital video to transform discarded objects found in the local flea market.

LIVING ARCHIVE

Within the framework of the festival LIVING ARCHIVE, KW Institute for Contemporary Art exhibits the results of the project LIVING ARCHIVE – ARCHIVE WORK AS CONTEMPORARY ARTISTIC AND CURATORIAL PRACTICE. The project was initiated in das 2011 by Arsenal –- Institute for Film and Video Art e. V., and offered artists, curators and other researchers the opportunity to develop a contemporary approach to the archive over a period of two years.

The participants present their research and their responses to Arsenal’s collection with screenings, installations, collections of materials and performances. On view are artistic as well as academic approaches to the archive, founded 50 years ago and containing about 8000 cinematic works.

Berlin

Ends 23.06.2013

The exhibition shows examinations of found footage in form and content, as well as reflections on the archive as a medium and on archival processes. Susanne Sachsse for example scrutinizes, inspired by a record of Brecht’s DIE MUTTER at Berliner Ensemble theater from 1958, what “serious ladies” might actually mean. Stephan Geene shows in a performance and a film the failure of staging a performative act. Film theorist Sabine Nessel and her class accompany the documentary short film WERNER HERZOG EATS HIS SHOE (Les Blank, 1980) with footage, drawing connecting lines, providing background information and creating new relations. Martin Ebner translates films schematically into objects containing individual information on length and structure, and Florian Zeyfang engages with the image between the cut of two film shots.

Ends 02.09.2015

You're invited to follow the amazing global art initiative 'FRAGILE - global performance chain journey' in which more than 750 artists from 62 countries are participating.
Can one fragile object, in times of email, chat and mobility, pass one time all around the world safely – from hand to hand, charging itself with stories and people? Will it be the same when it returns?

For the project, more than 750 artists from all over the world work together in one same action: all will carry one fragile object step by step around the planet.
The journey of the object and the works the artists will conceive during the project will be communicated on the website and in regular newsletters.
